History

BACKGROUND

United Mississippi Bank – formerly known as First Natchez Bank - was chartered on February 23, 1973 and opened its first office on May 14, 1973, in Natchez, Adams County Mississippi.  Since opening, United Mississippi Bank has been a recognized market leader in the financial services industry in southwest Mississippi.  United Mississippi Bank strives to meet the needs of each and every citizen in its market area.  Since its humble beginning in a mobile home on a parking lot in downtown Natchez, United Mississippi Bank has continued its tradition of hometown community banking, eventually opening a total of 5 branches in Natchez and an office in nearby Fayette, Jefferson County Mississippi.  In 1993, the bank moved its headquarters from its downtown location, to the current Operations Center on Melrose Montebello Parkway.

In the fall of 2003, United Mississippi Bank purchased the Commercial Bank in Woodville, Mississippi, a community approximately 30 miles from Natchez.  This acquisition increased the bank’s footprint in southwest Mississippi by moving into contiguous Wilkinson County.

The next expansion occurred with the purchase of the Merchants & Farmers Bank in Melville, Louisiana in 2011.  This purchase opened the door to the Louisiana market with the acquisition of a State of Louisiana charter.

On October 31, 2013 United Mississippi Bank purchased and merged with the former People’s Bank of the South, headquartered in Bude, Mississippi.  With additional branches in Meadville and Gloster, UMB moved into Franklin and Amite Counties, and now had a presence in all 5 counties comprising the southwestern corner of the state of Mississippi.

In an effort to operate more efficiently, the decision was made to close two branches in 2014. The branch in Melville, Louisiana and the Wal-Mart branch in Natchez were permanently closed, and customers were reassigned to other existing branches.

Finally, after operating out of a temporary location for several months, in August 2014 a de novo branch was constructed and opened in nearby Vidalia, Concordia Parish Louisiana, a sister city to Natchez separated only by the Mississippi River. This brought the bank to the current branch total of 11.
